Information about our project

You might find this section useful if you intend to apply to the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) for a similar community based whole food system approach.

Whitmuir Community Farm has looked at the food system as a whole at a community level, from growing vegetables and fruit following organic principles, to teaching people how to cook using seasonal and local ingredients, to providing a rural food waste collection service to produce compost on site, which is fed back to the growing sites. We are in the process of developing a toolkit to share with you – check back here soon! This will be a ‘live’ document which will be added to as we learn more, for example we are trialing using chipped cardboard rather than wood pellets in the Big Hanna compost machine.

As well as the toolkit we can offer groups wanting to address food waste and whole food systems:

  • Access to our community composting site and a study tour
  • Advice from our staff with regards to
    • community engagement; assessing the need, building up partnerships
    • planning the practicalities; working with local authorities
    • set-up; including registration with SEPA and following regulations
    • running the service
    • data collection and monitoring

We hope to join the Ideas Bank compiled by Climate Challenge Fund – if successful we will let you know here.

Recipes and cooking tips

We will be running a home composting workshop at the 2000m² plot at Whitmuir Community Farm during the afternoon on Friday 4th August at our open day – pop along and join in (no booking necessary).  If you would like more workshops please contact us.

Growing your own food can be really rewarding, starting with simple plants like strawberries and becoming more adventurous with potatoes and curly kale – you’ll be off on your own growing adventure in no time. Greener Scotland have a useful webpage for more information – but check back for our guides soon!
